Psychosexual Stages of Development

The theory of psychosexual stages of development takes place in 5 stages. These 5 stages are: oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latent stage, and genital stage.

The first stage is the oral stage. The libido is focused on the baby’s mouth. The baby gets satisfaction from putting everything in their mouths to satisfy the libido. Some examples are sucking, biting, and breastfeeding. The next stage is anal stage. Now the libido is focused on the anus. Now the child is aware of what is happening in the outside world and their ego develops. Potty training is also related to this stage because by having children getting early potty training, they will develop a personality that hates mess, is punctual and respectful of authority. The third stage is the phallic stage. Now the genitals get sensitive and masturbation becomes the new form of pleasure for both genders. Children now are aware of anatomical sex differences, which Freud called the Oedipus complex in boys and Electra complex in girls. The fourth stage is the latency stage. There is no more psychosexual development during this stage. Instead of sexual desires, the child focuses more on developing new skills and acquiring new knowledge by creating friendships and hobbies. The last stage is the genital stage. Now the person is focused on having relationships and getting heterosexual pleasure instead of self-pleasure.
